Hornets bounce back with drubbing of Warriors

COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Hornets have a way of turning a game of football into a game of keep away.


The Hornets ran 49 plays to 34 for Adena including the second quarter when Coal Grove ran19 plays and the Warriors a mere 5.


As a result, the Hornets routed the Warriors 37-7 to even their record at 1-1 on the season Friday night in a non-league game.


The stingiest player was Kaden Murphy who logged 22 carries for 222 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Caden Turner rushed 15 times for 76 yards and a pair of scores.


With the interior offensive line of Caiden Harris, Elijah Douglass, Max Klaiber, Nathaniel Wheeler and Josh Short controlling the line of scrimmage, the Hornets ran42 times for 338 yards.


Quarterback Rylan Smith was 4-of-7 passing for 71 yards as Coal Grove amassed 409 total yards to 178 for Adena (0-2) including 82 rushing and 96 passing.


Coal Grove began the game with an 80-yard, 10-play drive highlighted by Murphy’s 29-yard run to the Adena 9. Two plays later, Turner powered his way into the end zone from 8 yards out and it was 6-0.


Five plays into their first possession, Adena was hit and fumbled and Max Klaiber recovered.


Coal Grove then went 47 yards in five plays as Turner scored from 11 yards out. Turner caught the conversion pass for a 14-0 lead with 3:20 left in the quarter.


The Hornets dominated the second quarter with. 66-yard, 11-play march that made it 22-0. Murphy ran one-yard for the score and he added the extra points with 5:01 left in the half.


Coal Grove extended the lead to 30-0 on a 34-yard gallop by Murphy at the 3:27 mark. Braydon Klaiber added the conversion run and the running clock kicked on.


With the aid of a 45-yard kickoff return by Joey Francis to the Hornets’ 34 that helped set up their lone score.


On the first play of the fourth quarter, Colton Garrison got the ball on a flanker around and threw a pass to Francis for 25 yards and the touchdown. Xavier Ramos kicked the conversion.


But Coal Grove came right back to score and kick on the running clock again as Smith hit Logan Roberts with a 41-yard pass that set up an 8-yard scoring run by Murphy with 8:29 left to play. Case Webb kicked the conversion.


Coal Grove visits Nelsonville-York on Friday.
