Defensive effort keys Lady Hornets win over Ironton

IRONTON — If the Coal Grove Lady Hornets have any thoughts of being a lawyer, they’d focus on being a defense attorney.
Coal Grove used a strong defense to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 37-19 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
“I thought our defense was good all night,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller.
“Offensively, we didn’t convert on some good opportunities. Our offense wasn’t bad, we just didn’t make shots consistently.”
Jenna Anson scored 9 points to lead a balanced Coal Grove offense.
Lexi McCall had 9 points to pace Ironton (3-14, 3-8).
Coal Grove took a 9-5 first quarter lead as Izzy Kitts hit a 3-pointer while Haili McKnight and Kendall Taylor had baskets.
McCall scored 4 points for Ironton.
The Lady Hornets (14-4, 8-3) extended the lead to 20-10 at the half as Anson scored 6 points and Taylor hit a 3-pointer.
Addison Murray had 3 points for the Lady Tigers.
Coal Grove opened up a 31-13 lead after three quarters as Kitts and Karli Shore scored 4 points each and Emma Lively drilled a 3-pointer.
Ironton’s scoring came on 2 free throws from Aleigha Lawless and one from Murray.
