COAL GROVE — Coach Nick Miller dubbed it “The Ice Bowl.”
With icy grounds postponing all other games, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets were able to beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 60-35 on Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“Both teams were a little rusty after five days with little or no practice. It got better as the game went on,” said Miller.
“We got to play all of our 14 kids, which was good since there was no JV game.”
Each team hit a 3-pointer to start the game and then Kendall Taylor scored at the 5:35 mark and gave Coal Grove the lead for good at 5-3.
The Lady Hornets outscored Rock Hill 14-5 in the first quarter.
Coal Grove (13-4, 7-3) went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter to start opening up the lead. Jenna Anson scored 9 points in the quarter as the Lady Hornets built a 32-14 halftime cushion.
Coal Grove outscored the Redwomen 16-9 in the third quarter to build a comfortable 48-23 lead after three quarters.
Anson led the Lady Hornets with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Emma Lively was 3 of 3 from 3-pointer range and scored 13 points. Taylor had 8 assists which was just one off the program’s single-game record.
Rock Hill (1-16, 0-12) was led by Adalyn Simpkins with 8 points and Blayr Knipp with 7.
