Ironton Takes Advantage of Errors to Stay Undefeated

IRONTON — Thanks for the help. It was appreciated.

Ironton was able to thank the Coal Grove Hornets for committing 4 errors as the Fighting Tigers combined the errors with 8 hits en route to a 12-2 run rule win in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.

Ian Ginger and Jacob Hughes both went 2-2 with 2 runs batted in to lead Ironton. Nick Sites was 1-1, Carson Freeman 1-2 with 2 RBI, Carter Bridge and Tyler Roach 1-3 and Tanner Kleinman had 2 RBIs.

Dawson Philyaw got the win as he worked the first 2 innings allowing 2 hits, no runs with 4 strikeouts and no walks. Freeman worked the final 3 innings, gave up 2 earned runs with 4 strikeouts and one walk.

Ironton (4-0, 3-0) jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning.

Bryson Kerns and Roach were hit by the pitch and moved up on a passed ball. Kerns scored on a wild pitch and Roach came home on a hit by Ginger.

An error moved up the runner and Hughes singled him home.

The lead went to 8-0 in the 8-0 in the second.

Sites and Kerns walked, Roach, Ginger and Hughes all singled and Kleinman reached on an error.

Coal Grove (1-5, 0-4) got both its runs in the third when Landon McKnight walked, Leland McKnight singled, the runners moved up on a wild pitch and Derik Bloomfield singled them home.

Ironton got 3 more runs in the fourth to lead 11-2.

Tyson Harvey and Ethan Sutton were hit by a pitch, Kleinman reached on a fielder’s choice, and Bridges, Freeman and Sites all followed with base hits.

The final run scored with no outs in the fifth when Braydon Baker walked, went to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Bloomfield was 2-3 with an RBI for the Hornets.
