Hunt's 23 helps Pointers withstand Vinton's long range shooting

SOUTH POINT — The Vinton County Vikings went downtown while the South Point Pointers stayed home and got the job done.

The Pointers used a balanced offense and strong rebounding effort to withstand 11 3-pointers by the Vikings as South Point posted a 59-52 win on Saturday.

Nash Yates scored 7 points as he and Jase Moore and Josh Montgomery all hit 3-pointers as the Vikings took a 15-9 first quarter lead.

Four different players scored for the Pointers in the quarter.

The Pointers rallied to take a 24-18 lead at the half as James Carey and Ethan Hunt scored 4 points each and Caesyn Pope hit a trifecta in the second quarter.

Vinton County (3-4) could only muster a 3-pointer by Brody Maynard for its offense.

The third quarter was an instant repeat of the second quarter as Carey and Hunt scored 4 each and Pope had another 3-pointer and the Pointers extended their lead to 46-37.

Moore had a pair of 3-pointers, Yates hit a trey and a double, and Montgomery had 6 points including another 3-pointer for the Vikings.

Hunt got hot in the fourth quarter and carried the Pointers’ offense as he hit three shots from behind the arc and scored 14 of South Point’s 22 points. Davon Lewis added a pair of 3-pointers and Carey got a basket.

Yates had a pair of triples and Moore hit a trey for the Vikings.

Hunt led the Pointers with 23 points, 8 rebounds and assists. Lewis scored 12 points, Carey had 8 points and 8 rebounds, and Pope got 8 points and 4 assists.

Yates scored 18 points including four 3-pointers and Moore had 12 points all on 3-pointers. Montgomery added 11 points.
