Vikings score record points in 1st quarter to stay undefeated; turn sights to 1st place showdown

WILLOW WOOD — Seven different players accounted for a Symmes Valley touchdown during an explosion of 1st quarter points, as the Vikings rolled to a 66-12 win over the Green Bobcats on Friday night.
All told, 55 points were scored in the first quarter and the Vikings' 49-points set a school record. The Vikings also set a school record with 63 points in the first half.
The Vikings (6-0, 1-0 SOC) can now turn their sights towards their highly anticipated showdown against the undefeated Eastern Eagles in Beaver next Friday night.
Green (0-5, 0-1) returns home to face undefeated Portsmouth Notre Dame.
Quarterback Bronx Carpenter enjoyed another efficient night, completing 10 of 14 passes for 242 yards and tossing 3 touchdown passes. All of his stats came in the first quarter, paving the way for backup Jordan Nance to finish out the game behind center.
Nance finished 5 of 8 for 92 yards and threw a second quarter touchdown pass to Colton Taylor on an RPO play that made the score 56-6 in the second.
Symmes Valley's offense worked fast during the first quarter, needing just 6 plays to find the end zone. Asher Maynard followed up last week's big game with the game's first score on a 1 yard run.
Maynard finished the night by only touching the ball 3 times, but scored on the ground once and later followed up by catching a swing pass from Carpenter and shook off tacklers along the sideline and went 50-yards for a touchdown.
On the two-point conversion try, Tucker Ross — the center — traded in his lineman number for receiver number, and made his first varsity reception on a pass from Carpenter to make it 8-0 at the 9:01 mark.
An interception by Gradee Holland set up another touchdown pass by Carpenter to Levi Russell for a 29-yard score. Miguel Ferreira added the extra point to make it 15-0.
The Bobcats made things a little uncomfortable for the Viking faithful on the ensuing kickoff, as Leland Blevins fielded Ferreira's kick from his own 20. Blevins found a seam on the far side, bounced out to the sideline and went coast-to-coast for an 80 yard return and made the score 15-6.
But that uncomfortable feeling went away fast on the home side, as the Vikings scored 34-straight points over the final 6:58 to lead 49-6.
During that scoring barrage, Ayden Freeman found the end zone on a 1-yard run.
On Green's ensuing possession, Mason Adams stepped in front of a pass in the flats for an interception and raced 68 yards for the score.
Then Carpenter threw his final touchdown pass on a 7 yard toss to J.R. Turner to make it.
Turner came up with an interception at midfield and returned it inside the Green red zone, setting up Michael Weaver's leaping touchdown run to close out the scoring in the first quarter.
The defense came up with another touchdown in the second, as an errant snap from center rolled into the end zone and defensive lineman Bentley Martin pounced on the ball.
The Vikings final points of the game came off the foot of Ferreira with a chip shot field goal from 23 yards away with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
The Bobcats added the final score of the night when Riddick Jenkins intercepted a pass at his own 9 and
Green was led offensively by Elijah Evans who completed 7 of 17 passes for 88 yards. Jenkins finished the top target with 6 catches for 82 yards.
