PROCTORVILLE — The Fairland athletic department announced the hiring of Mason Fannin as the new head coach of the boys soccer team.

Fannin makes history as the first former Fairland soccer player to take the helm of the program.

A 2020 graduate of Fairland, Fannin had an outstanding playing career with the Dragons, scoring 53 goals and earning a scholarship to Shawnee State University where he played for two seasons.

He recently graduated from Shawnee State and is currently working toward his physical therapy certification.

“I am extremely excited for Mason and what this means for our program,” said Fairland athletic director Jeff Gorby.

“His experience as a former player, combined with his passion and commitment to the sport, will make a lasting impact on our athletes and the community.”

Coach Fannin inherits a program coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history.

Under former head coach Jason Wyant who completed seven strong seasons with the Dragons, the 2023 squad set a school record with 12 wins, finished second in the OVC, and advanced to the OHSAA District semifinals.

“The Fairland soccer program has always been special to me because of my roots here,” said Fannin. “Coach Wyant left the program in great shape, and I’m excited to continue that tradition and build on the foundation he created.”

Fannin will lead a talented roster in 2024, including senior Trevor Lochow, the reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Year, junior Kyle Salyer, a two-year starter, and rising star David Monge, who made a big impact last season.

“Gallia Academy and South Point always field strong teams and will be tough OVC competition again,” Fannin noted.

“But our returning players and the culture here make me confident in what we can accomplish.”

“Mason is a great hire for our community,” added Gorby. “He will do amazing things with the Fairland Soccer program.”

The Dragons will kick off their 13th varsity season this fall.
