PROCTORVILLE — As Hannibal Smith of the A-Team used to say, “I love it when a plan comes together.”
The Fairland Dragons head coach Mike Jackson had a plan and his team made it come together in a 40-15 win over the Pt. Pleasant Black Knights on Friday.
The Dragons were able to shut down the Black Knights running game for the most part and the offense used several weapons to help Fairland even its record at 1-1.
“We had a game plan and our defense executed it perfectly,” said Jackson.
“Our linebackers did a good job. We stopped the jet and we told the middle guys to stop the trap.”
The Dragons racked up 374 total yards with 230 coming on the ground as Christian Bompus ran 8 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns while Xander Collins had 73 yards on 16 attempts and scored three touchdowns.
Quarterback Owen Burcham was 8-of-14 passing for 144 yards and an interception. He also ran 5 times for 28 yards.
“(Burcham’s) not very big and we thought the ball might give him a little trouble, but he’s worked on it and every week he’s getting better throwing the ball. He’s already as athletic as can be and quick as a cat. He’ll give some teams some trouble for sure,” said Jackson.
The Black Knights (0-2) had 332 yards of offense thanks mainly to quarterback Caden Hill who ran 15 times for 145 yards and a touchdown while also completing 5-of-10 passes for 138 yards and a score.
Bompus set the tone for the Dragons’ offense as he bolted 74 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the game and it was 6-0.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Dragons went back to work with a 56-yard drive in nine plays capped by Collins’ one-yard run. J.C. Auxier kicked the conference and it was 13-0 with 6:33 on the clock.
Fairland forced another punt and began a drive that spilled over into the second quarter with Collins running the final yard for the score. The drive covered 52 yards in nine plays and Auxier again kicked the conversion with 11:02 left in the half to make it 20-0.
Pt. Pleasant came out the second half looking to make it a game as Hill ran 45 and 32 yards on the first two plays of the half and he scored the second play. Addison Burt’s conversion kick made it 20-7 just 51 seconds into the half.
But Fairland wasted little time answering the challenge by going 65 yards in only four plays including the final two plays with Collins running for 29 yards and Bompus the final 25 for the touchdown and it was 27-7 with 9:17 left in the quarter.
After another Black Knights’ punt, the Dragons went 51 yards in five plays as Burcham hit Connor Black for 20 yards, Collins ran for 9 and Burcham ran 14 yards to the 5-yard line, then pitched the ball to Rickard who ran the final five yards for the touchdown.
The kick failed and the lead was 33-7 with 4:56 left in the quarter.
Fairland then drove 61 yards in 11 plays and Collins ran 13 yards up the middle for the score with 10:57 to play. Auxier added the conversion and it was 40-7.
Pt. Pleasant tacked on a score with 8:30 to go against the backups as Isaiah Waminam caught a 38-yard pass from Hill.
Gavin Barnett caught the conversion pass to set the final score.
Fairland will host Fairfield Union next Friday.
