Strow, Thompson key Vikings win over Southern

AID — The Symmes Valley got key contributions from both Andy Strow and Tanner Thompson to help beat the Southern Tornadoes 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Strow delivered from the mound with a 5-hit performance in seven innings of work and went 2-for-2 with an RBI at the plate. Thompson came up big with a double and a pair of RBIs to help with the win.

Other Vikings that contributed offensively were Tanner Corn who went 2-3 with an RBI, Carson Brammer went 1-3 and an RBI. Mason Campbell 1-3, Gradee Holland 1-3.

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Strow singled to lead things off. Then Thompson doubled into center field to score Strow from second. Then Corn singled down the left field line to score Thompson, and Brammer grounded out, but Corn managed to score on the play.

In the third, Southern cut into the lead to make it 3-2.

The Vikings (8-8) got one run back in the bottom of the frame when Brammer singled in a run to make it 4-2. Then the Vikings added two more insurance in the fourth when Strow singled into center to bring home a run and Thompson hit into a fielders' choice, but allowed Gradee Holland to score to make it 6-2.

The Tornadoes (6-8) tried to rally in the sixth, but the defense slammed the door shut.

Abe Thomas singled in a run to cut the lead down to three, but was throw out by Corn trying to steal second base for the second out. Then Strow retired the side with a strikeout to end the threat.

In the seventh, Strow got all three batters he faced to fly out in order to close out the game.

Southern was led by Thomas with a hit and an RBI. Will Smith had an RBI. Kase Nelson, Jake Wickline, Jett Lisle and Landon Jones each collected a hit.
