1st quarter scoring frenzy keeps Vikings undefeated ahead of SOC showdown

FRANKLIN FURNACE — A lot like last week, the Symmes Valley Vikings scored quickly and often and rolled their way past the Green Bobcats for a 62-6 win on Thursday night in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Last week, the Vikings used a lot of short fields to score frequently. Flash forward to this week, the Vikings pretty much did from anywhere at anytime.

While satisfied with the outcome, Vikings coach Ben Ferguson was aware of some things his team still needed to improve on as the bigger games on the schedule loom ahead.

"I think we came out and executed some plays very well and then sometimes we didn't. It's little things that might not reflect on the score, but over this weekend, there are things we need to work on before next week"

Quarterback Bronx Carpenter was an efficient 10-of-12 passing for 348 and six touchdown tosses. Backup Jordan Nance got into the act as well and threw for another 80 yards and a touchdown pass as the Vikings finished the night with 408 yards through the air.

The top targets in Symmes Valley's aerial assault were Jackson Fields with 4 receptions for 158 yards and a pair of scores. Levi Russell was another key target with 3 catches for 65 yards and a receiving score.

Symmes Valley (6-0, 1-0 SOC1) got off to a rolling start, needing just three plays to find the end zone.

The final play was a 27-yard touchdown strike by Carpenter to Roth.

Enoch Patterson tacked on two touchdown runs in the middle of the scoring frenzy. His first came on a 1-yarder at the 9:26 mark. Then later the senior back broke loose up the gut for a 40-yard scamper to make it 28-0 with 7:16 remaining in the opening frame.

"Enoch stepped in and did a good job, as did Aydan (Freeman). We challenged them a little this week in practice to fill a role for us and they did their job," said Ferguson.

Trailing 28-0, the Bobcats (1-5, 0-1) put together their lone scoring drive of the night.

Gabe Blevins was able to hit Kaleb Mutter in stride and Mutter raced 65 yards to put the Bobcats on the board.

After Patterson scored his second touchdown, Carpenter tacked on three more passing touchdowns.

Fields would pull in a catch in the flats, turn up field and into the end zone for a 9-yard score. Then later, Andrew Isaacs pulled in a catch for a 50-yard bomb to give the Vikings a 49-6 lead after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Carpenter and Fields hooked up again for 73-yards to pay dirt.

Then Nance capped off the scoring for the night with a 30-yard strike down the middle of the field to Connor Moore to give the final score.

The Bobcats' offense was paced by Blevins' 147 yards passing. His top target on the night was Mutter with four receptions for a game-high 136 yards. Noah McMackin registered the only other reception for the Bobcats, with an 11-yard catch.

Symmes Valley will now turn its attention to the Eastern Eagles in an anticipated showdown next week in Willow Wood.

Acknowledging the importance of the game, Ferguson still wants his team to continue taking their one-game-at-a-time approach and focus on the goals in front of them.

"The one thing is we always talk about with the kids is going 1-0 every week. Well, now this is the week. So now you can't look ahead and you need to focus because this is the team that has set the standard in our conference the past several years."

The Bobcats will head to Portsmouth to face Notre Dame.
