All-around effort leads Flyers to win over Rebels

CROWN CITY — The St. Joseph Flyers “had their Wag on.”

Not swag, but their Wag as in Waginger.

Beckham Waginger went 4-4 with a pair of runs batted in and brother Barrett Waginger gave up just one hit and pitched four scoreless innings in his first career start as the Flyers blanked the South Gallia Rebels 12-0 in a five-inning run rule on Tuesday.

“Beckham and Barrett had big games for us. They have a lot of ability,” said Flyers’ coach Nick Medinger. “But this was a good team win. We had a lot of contributions up and down the lineup. We played pretty well.”

Barrett Waginger struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk. Braden Neal worked the fifth inning allowing just one hit as the duo combined on a two-hitter.

The Flyers (2-0) had 15 hits with Ethan Aldridge going 3-3 with a double and two RBI, Carson Willis 2-3 with two RBI, Neal 1-3 with a double and two RBI, Blake Medinger 2-3, Mason Weber 1-2 with two RBI, and Carson Lyons and Barrett Waginger both 1-3.

Hayden Kemp and Lincoln Shamblin each went 1-2 for South Gallia (0-2).

The Flyers got the only run they really needed in the first inning on a walk to Weber who stole second and scored on a hit by Beckham Waginger.

St. Joseph had a two-out, two-run rally in the third to lead 3-0.

Lyons was safe on an error, Aldridge single and Neal belted a two-run double.

The Flyers opened up a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Medinger singled, stole second and third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Weber.

Beckham Waginger singled, Lyons walked, Aldridge doubled for a run, Willis singled home a run and Aldridge stole home.

The final five runs scored in the fifth inning.

Barrett Waginger and Medinger singled and Weber had an RBI single, Beckham Waginger doubled for a run and Lyons and Aldridge followed with base hits.
