PROCTORVILLE — The Chesapeake Panthers finished the job. The Fairland Dragons might be looking at some unpaid overtime.
The Panthers shot the ball well as they beat the cold-shooting Dragons 80-58 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
Chesapeake was hot from the floor, making 30 of 53 attempts for 57 percent while Fairland struggled for the field by making only 16 of 56 attempts for a mere 28.7 percent,
“They’re a great team. They’re a great team and they’re well coached,” said Fairland coach Scott Thomas.
”We missed those little shots we’ve got to make to win. We’re executing better, it’s just those bunny shots that we’re missing. We’re working on passing up those bad shots for a good shot,”
Maddox Kazee was on target for 25 points, Kaden Perkins scored 20 and Karson Frecka had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers, 15-1 overall and 9-1 in the OVC.
Cliff Fransen and Trevor Lochow scored 20 points each to pace Fairland (8-7, 5-5) and Ford Rickard add 10.
Ford Rickard’s 3-pointer had the Dragons down just 8-7 only to have Kazee hit a triple and Perkins had 8 points including a pair of layups for a 20-8 lead.
Fransen followed up a missed shot, was fouled and converted the free throw to make it 20-12 at the end of the quarter.
Fransen hit a 3-pointer and Lochow made a 12-footer as Fairland trailed 22-17 early in the second quarter.
Kazee drilled a 3-pointer and Perkins had a fastbreak layup to make it 27-17.
The Dragons got within 27-22 on a putback by Stephen Jones only to have the Panthers score 12 unanswered points to lead 39-22.
Lochow hit a 3-pointer to stop the run and he hit a 28-footer at the buzzer and it was 39-28 at the half.
Frecka made back-to-back shots to start the second half before the Dragons’ Gerald Love hit a 3-pointer and it was 43-31.
Two free throws by Philip Thacker and a steal and layup by Perkins gave Chesapeake a 47-31 lead.
A basket by Kazee and two foul shots by Thacker made it 60-41with 1:21 left in the third quarter.
Lochow hit another long 3-pointer and the Panthers’ lead was 61-46.
The Panthers continued to pull away as they went on a 15-4 run to start the fourth quarter.
Weather has played havoc with the schedule and the teams were able to play the game while it snowed outside.
“We haven’t played in 10 days and they haven’t played in 10 days so we were glad to get the game in,” said Thomas.
