Vikings, Holland battle past the Panthers in regular season finale

AID — Holland the country is known for windmills. Holland — the Symmes Valley pitcher is —know for fighting opposing batters.

Gradee Holland battled opposing batters like Don Quixote battled the windmills as the Vikings beat the Chesapeake Panthers 6-4 on Friday.

Holland scattered 10 hits, struck out 8 and walked just 2 as the Vikings built a 6-1 lead and held on for the win.

Chesapeake (11-15) took a 1-0 lead to start the game when Kaden Perkins reached on an error, stole second and scored on a hit by Clay Wagner.

Symmes Valley (12-11) came right back with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Andy Strow was hit by a pitch leading off, Tanner Corn walked and Carson Brammer had an RBI double. Mason Campbell hit a sacrifice fly and Holland aided his own cause with an RBI single.

The Vikings added 2 more runs in the second inning and it was 5-1.

Strow walked with one out, Tanner Thompson reached on an error and Corn singled for a run. Brammer hit into a fielder’s choice for the second run.

Symmes Valley got its final run in the fourth when Thompson walked, stole second and rode home on a hit by Brammer.

Chesapeake came back with 2 runs in the fifth.

Perkins walked, stole second and third, and Wagner had another RBI single. Wagner stole second and scored on a hit by Peyton Muncy.

The Panthers rallied in the seventh but only managed one run when Mason Budd singled, stole second and came home on a hit by Joe Cremeans.

Wagner was 3-4 with 2 runs batted in and Muncy 3-4 with an RBI to pace Chesapeake’s offense. Cremeans was 2-4 with an RBI and Jon-Cooper Barker was 1-3.

Brammer was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI to top the Vikings’ offense with Corn going 2-4 with an RBI. Holland was 1-3 with an RBI and Hutchison was 1-3.
