Lady Dragons take 1 of 3 in highly competitive Beach Ball Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Fairland Lady Dragons may have been at the beach, but Bailey Russell was downtown.

Russell was a sizzling 7 of 11 from behind the arc and made 12 of 19 from the field overall as she scored 33 points as the Lady Dragons rolled past the Ramsay Academy Rams of Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday at the Beach Ball Classic.

Russell scored 9 points in the first quarter including a 3-pointer while Addison Godby scored 8 points to put the Lady Dragons up 23-15.

Lola Donahue scored 6 points while Teagan Leep and Russell each had treys in the second quarter and the defense held the Rams to 8 points as the lead ballooned to 41-23.

But Russell came out of the locker room with a red-hot hand as she drained five 3-pointers and scored 21 of Fairland’s 33 points in the quarter.

Isa Taliaferro hit a 3-pointer and added 5 points in the quarter for the Lady Dragons who built a 74-38 lead.

Godby finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Taliafero had 6 rebounds and 11 assists Stella Whitley pulled down 8 rebounds and Donahue 6 boards.

Kayden May scored 18 for Ramsay.

No, the game didn’t lack meaning. The Lady Dragons were guilty of 23 turnovers in a 65-51 loss to the South Pointe Stallions of Rock Hill, S.C.

Fairland (6-2) had four players in double figures with Isa Taliaferro scoring 12 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Scoring 10 points each were Addison Godby, Bailey Russell and Addyson Cornell.

Kaleigh Lucas scored 24 points for the Stallions (9-2).

Fairland (5-1) shot a dismal 11 of 47 from the field for 23 percent and 8 of 31 from 3-point range for 26 percent.

Bailey Russell and Isa Taliaferro led the offense as they scored 9 points each. Addison Godby had 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Asia Clinkscales and Khalia Hartwell scored 11 points each for the Rams who were 13 of 15 at the foul line.
