IRONTON — An unlucky bounce for one team proved to be the lucky break the other team needed.

A second half shot that was blocked by St. Joseph goalkeeper Beckham Waginger went in Lucasville Valley’s Caysen Zieber’s direction and he made good on the rebound kick to score.

The shot proved to be the only goal of the game as the Valley Indians nipped the St. Joseph Flyers 1-0 in a showdown for first place in the Southern Ohio-1 soccer standings.

“Valley’s a good team and they outplayed us. They got the goal we couldn’t get,” said Flyers’ coach Mike Balestra.

“We’ve got a very young team as far as up front, but they’ll get better. Our defense played great all game, but you can’t have them on your side of the field that long and not give up a goal sooner or later.”

The goal came at 32:19 of the second half and was the only blemish on what was an outstanding job by Flyers’ goalkeeper Beckham Waginger who had 17 saves as Valley took 18 shots on goal.

The Flyers took 8 shots on goal with Indians’ goalkeeper Hunter Sparks getting 5 saves.

Valley is now 8-1-2 on the season and 5-0-1 in the SOC. St. Joseph is now 7-3-1 and 4-1-1 in the conference. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first meeting.

The Flyers will host New Boston at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and honor their five seniors Ian Whaley, Blake Medinger, Carson Willis, Kemper Kerecman and Carson Lyons.
