AID — Brayden Hanshaw's go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth proved to be the game winner, as the South Point Pointers edged past the Symmes Valley Vikings 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Hanshaw came to bat with the game knotted up at 2-all, with two outs and runners on second and third. Hanshaw singled into left on a 3-2 pitch, to drive home Ryder Pratt for what would be the game-winning run.

South Point was led at the plate by Kolton Layman, who went 2-for-5. Hanshaw had a hit and an RBI. Ethan Layne, Joey Lobaldo and Ethan Laslo each had a hit.

Bronx Carpenter went 3-5 to lead the Vikings' offense. Braden Hankins and Jackson Fields both went 2-4. Tanner Thompson doubled, Will Jones had an RBI, and Tanner Corn and Asher Maynard each had a hit.

The game turned into a pitchers duel, as both teams' each allowed just one earned run on the night.

Layne earned the win, going six innings for South Point (10-7). Layne gave up 10 hits, but allowed just one earned run, a walk and struck out two. Caesyn Pope came on in the ninth in relief, retiring the side in order and recording a strikeout to earn the save.

The Vikings (14-8) took the lead in the first, getting a leadoff single from Carpenter and a double from Thompson to put both runners in scoring position. Jones hit a sacrifice fly into center to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

Lobaldo led off the inning with a single and Owen Tabor drew a walk. Later, Laslo reached on an error and Lobaldo was able to score from second to tie the score. Pratt was able to reach on another error, which allowed Tabor to score from third and give the Pointers a 2-1 lead.

South Point would hold the lead until the bottom of the seventh.

With one out, Fields singled into left. Carpenter followed with a base hit and an error allowed Fields to score all the way from first and tie the game. Thompson drew a walk on the ensuing at bat to put runners on first and second.

But the Vikings would let the scoring threat slip through their hands, as Layne retired the next two batters with a flyout and a fielders' choice to send the game into extra innings.

Both teams had a runner reach second in the eighth, but couldn't convert on the scoring chances.

In the ninth, Pratt got on base after being hit by a pitch, Layman singled to put Pratt on third and set up Hanshaw's at bat.
