Late score lifts Falcons past Panthers

CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Panthers bounced back from last week’s loss and played well on 46 of this week’s 48 minutes.

But the last two minutes proved to be killers in a 21-14 loss to the Minford Falcons last Friday.

Chesapeake (0-2) tied the game just before the half as Jon-Cooper Barker scrambled and went 23 yards for the touchdown.

Barker then threw to Philip Thacker for the conversion and it was 14-all.

The score remained tied until late in the fourth quarter. Curt Glenn hit Wyatt Swick with a 50-yard pass to set up his own 1-yard scoring run to put Minford ahead 21-14 with 2:20 to play.

Chesapeake got the ball and looked to try and tie the game only to have Glenn come up with a big interception with 2:09 to play and Minford ran out the clock to seal the win.

Minford (1-1) went on a 67-yard, 14-play drive early capped by Glenn’s 7-yard run and Mason Bradley’s conversion kick made it 7-0 with 8:27 on the clock.

Chesapeake fumbled on its possession and Marty Sparks recovered for the Falcons which set up a 28-yard scoring pass from Glenn to Swick and it was 14-0 with 1:13 left in the first quarter.

But the Panthers answered quickly as Barker teamed up with Thacker on a 73-yard scoring pass play to trail 14-6.

Barker took over the quarterback job this week and was 7-of-18 with two interceptions  for 132 yards. Barker also ran 8 times for 25 yards as he ran and threw for touchdowns.

Thacker had a big game with 123 yards on 4 catches including the TD.

Glenn ran 37 times for 75 yards and was 13-of-24 passing for 154 yards. He also threw for a touchdown and ran for two more.
