Lady Vikings Battle, But Fall Short To Lady Pirates

WILLOW WOOD — Another tough game and another tough loss for the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings.

The Lady Vikings battled back in the fourth period, but the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates would pull away in the final minutes to slip away with a 38-33 win on Monday night.

Symmes Valley was led by the Maynard twins, with Kaitlyn scoring 13 points and Kayley with 12. Lydia Saunders chipped in 6 and Brenna Tibbs had 3.

Kaitlyn Maynard had a game-high 12 rebounds, including 5 offensive boards. Riley Loudenburg was right behind her, grabbing 10 rebounds.

Wheelersburg's Peyton May scored 6 of her team-high 13 points in the first quarter to help give the Lady Pirates a 10-9 lead after one period.

Symmes Valley (0-6) would battle back in the second, taking the lead with 2:30 remaining in the half on Kaitlyn Maynard's layup off an inbound pass under her own basket to put the Lady Vikings ahead 15-14.

But a 3-pointer from Callie DeHart and a layup from Ava Artrip helped Wheelersburg close out the half with a quick scoring burst to take a 19-15 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Vikings would draw even at 21-all midway through the third period when Kaitlyn Maynard scored on a put-back.

Jaylinn Prather hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Lady Pirates (2-0) finished the period on a 7-2 run and took a lead 28-23 into the fourth.

But the Vikings battled back in the fourth, as Kaitlyn Maynard would score 6 of Symmes Valley's 10 points in the final period.

Both Kaylyn and Kaitlyn Maynard scored on back-to-back possession to cut the deficit to 4 with 3:25 left.

Then Kaitlyn Maynard drew a foul and sank two shots from the charity stripe to cut the Wheelersburg lead to 35-33 with 2:47 remaining.

But the Lady Pirates would close the game out from the foul line, sinking 4-of-6 shots to make the final score 38-33.

Prather finished the night with 8 points for Wheelersburg. Teammates Artrip and DeHart added 11 and 6, respectively.
