Hornets rout Panthers to keep Little Brown Jug

COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Hornets got some unexpected time off.
After building a big lead early, the Hornets first unit began exiting the game late in the second quarter and didn’t return as they beat the Chesapeake Panthers 60-14 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
The win gave the Hornets a 2-2 record overall and 1-0 in the OVC. It also allowed Coal Grove to keep the Old Brown Jug which goes to the winner in this rivalry.
Kaden Murphy racked up 216 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 8 carries. He also returned an interception for a score.
Caden Turner had 57 yards on only 5 carries and scored twice as Coal Grove racked up 431 rushing yards and had 479 total yards. Braden Schug came off the bench to gain 66 yards on 5 carries.
Chesapeake (0-4, 0-1) had 198 total yards with only 44 on the ground. The Panthers were 16-of-30 passing for 154 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
After a Chesapeake punt to start the game, the Hornets scored on the next play as Murphy bolted 63 yards. Turner’s conversion run made it 8-0.
Schug recovered the pooch kickoff and the Panthers’ 39 and 2 plays later Turner went 24 yards for the score and it was 14-0 with 9:47 on the clock.
Chesapeake went 53 yards in 11 plays with Aaden Nester-Howard throwing 8 yards to Andrew Isaacs for the touchdown at the 6:36 mark of the quarter. Zack Burdine caught the conversion to make it 14-8.
Coal Grove then went 6-3 yards in 9 plays and Turner ran the final 20 yards to make it 20-8 with 1:37 left in the quarter.
Chesapeake drove to the Coal Grove 10-yard line only to stall. On the ensuing play, Murphy turned the corner and ran 90 yards for the touchdown and the lead was 26-8.
Chesapeake started a drive and reached the Hornets’ 41 only to have Murphy pick off a pass and return it 70 yards for the touchdown and it was 32-8 with 7:51 left in the half.
The Panthers turned the ball over on downs at the Coal Grove 35 and it took the Hornets 2 plays to score as Truitt Fields hit Logan Roberts with a 32-yard pass and then Murphy ran the final 33 yards and it was 38-8 with 4:28 on the clock.
As the backups began to trickle into the game, the Hornets got a touchdown with just 4 seconds left in the half as Truitt hit Leland McKnight with a 9-yard touchdown pass. Case Webb kicked the conversion and it was 45-8.
Coal Grove came out in the second half and went 44 yards in 4 plays highlighted by Schug’s 36-yard run and Webb ran the final 5 yards for the touchdown and also kicked the conversion to make it 52-8 with 8:44 on the third quarter clock.
In the fourth quarter, Jayden Washington hit Aden Parrott with a halfback pass that covered 58 yards for the touchdown. The conversion run failed and it was 52-14.
The Hornets capped off the scoring as Brayden Young ran 2 yards to culminate a 64-yard, 8-play drive. Braxton Patrick ran for the conversion and it was 60-14 with 2:22 to go.
The Hornets visit Portsmouth on Friday while Chesapeake hosts Grandview Heights.
