Flyers rally back to get key SOC win over Clay

IRONTON — After giving some goals away early, the St. Joseph Flyers decided it was time to get some goals of their own.
After falling behind 2-0, the Flyers took control and posted a 5-2 Southern Ohio Conference-1 soccer win over the Portsmouth Clay Panthers.
The Flyers are now 5-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the SOC. Clay falls to 3-3 and 2-1.
Billy Miller of Clay scored on a penalty kick with 25:20 on the first half clock. With 10:20 left in the half, Miller scored on an unassisted free kick.
That’s when Jack Whaley took over and scored off a through ball from assist machine Blake Medinger with just 3:45 left in the half.
Carson Lyons scored on a penalty kick with 39:41 on the second half clock as the Flyers tied the game at 2-all.
Whaley continued his strong effort as he gave the Flyers the lead with a goal off a through ball assist from Brayden Neal with 25:32 left in the half.
Lyons scored again on a penalty kick moments later at the 25:54 mark.
Neal put the icing on the win with a goal off a through ball assist from Whaley with just 2:17 to play.
Beckham Waginger had another solid game as the Flyers goalkeeper by turning away 8 shots on goal. Colby Secrist of Clay had 6 saves.
The game was hotly contested as Clay was called for 20 fouls including 4 yellow cards and one red card while the Flyers had 14 fouls with a yellow card.
The Flyers play a non-league game Wednesday at Rock Hill.
