LUCASVILLE — The top two teams in the Southern Ohio Conference 1 met Tuesday to see who would take over first place.

We’ll have to wait for the rematch.

In a monumental battle, the St. Joseph Flyers and Lucasville Valley Indians fought to a scoreless tie.

St. Joseph is now 4-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SOC. Valley is 4-1-2 and 1-0-1 in the conference.

The two teams will meet again on Monday, Sept. 22, at Father Clouston Field.

Flyers’ goalkeeper Beckham Waginger had an outstanding game as he registered 13 saves as Valley took 13 shots, all on goal.

Indians’ goalkeeper Hunter Sparks had 4 saves as the Flyers took 8 shots on goal.

The first half was a game of cat and mouse with the teams going back-and-forth as they spent time in each other’s territory. Valley had 8 shots on goal in the first half and the Flyers just 3.

St. Joseph had three shots that nearly hit the mark.

Carson Willis fired a missile that was steered wide by Sparks, Carson Lyons sent a corner kick into the arms of the keeper and Blake Medinger hit a deflected ball that sailed just wide of the upright.

One reason for the Flyers lack of opportunities in the first half was a pair of injuries. One player did not return to play while the second managed to play with pain and play the second half.

The Indians controlled the second half as they spent most of the time in Flyers’ territory. Waginger had 5 saves in the half including the stop of a 16-foot rocket shot off the foot of Jaxsyn Bender midway through the half.

Valley had a chance to take the lead with less than 3 minutes in regulation time, when Waginger made a stop in front of the net, but Bender's put back off the rebound went left of the net.

Jack Whaley had the only shot on goal in the second half for the Flyers. The corner kick appeared head for the corner of the next only to be stopped by a diving Sparks.

St. Joseph deployed all 10 players in front of Waginger to limit the scoring opportunities for the Indians in the second half.

The Flyers host Portsmouth Clay at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in an SOC game.

St. Joseph 0 0 = 0

Lucasville 0 0 = 0
