Quick-strike Musketeers burn past Panthers for 3rd-straight win

LLOYD — A quick-strike offense from Greenup County proved to be too much for Fleming County as the Musketeers blew away the Panthers 48-12 on Friday night at Musketeer Stadium.

Greenup County was headlined by quarterback Jasper Davis who finished the night completing 8 of 12 passes for 201 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses. Davis also ran in for a score.

Ashur Wireman went over the century mark for the second-straight week with 5 carries for 110 yards and a pair of scores on the ground.

“Overall, I mean we played a pretty good game,” said Greenup coach Travis Jones. “Fleming is a pretty good team. But I think we played our most complete game.”

The Panthers (2-3) came out and put together a time-consuming drive on their opening possession.

Fleming was able to drive as far as the Greenup 39, but the drive broke down when Jett Martin's 4th down pass missed the mark, giving the ball back to Greenup with 6:28 to go in the opening frame.

The stop proved to be a swing in momentum, as just a few plays later Davis let a pass fly down the middle of the field and Landry Lewis cradled the ball in for a 40-yard gain to the Panther 5.

On the ensuing play, Ashur Wireman took a handoff and barreled over a tackler and slipped through another for the final yardage for the score. Carter Nunley added the point after and Greenup led 7-0 at the 5:30 mark of the first.

A shanked punt set the Musketeers (4-1) up at the Fleming 30 on their second possession and quickly found the end zone again.

This time it was Collin Melvin negotiating the final 3 yards of the drive to make it 14-0.

A blocked punt by Noah McCullough set the Musketeers third possession up.

Two plays later, Davis walked his way in from 5 yards out to make it 20-0.

Fleming would piece together its best drive of the night, rolling 78 yards in 15 plays. During the drive, the Panthers converted a fourth down play en route to their first score when Martin hit Paxton Jones on a 13-yard swing pass to cut into the Musketeer lead.

The at would be the closest the Panthers would get as Greenup would answer just two plays into their next drive.

Davis would make an option pitch to Wireman towards the home bench, and Wireman would go 82-yards untouched to score and electrify the home crowd. Nunley added the extra point to make it 27-6 with 2:32 remaining before halftime.

After the defense made a fourth down stop near midfield, the Musketeers got the ball back with just 49 seconds before halftime.

But they needed just two plays and 18 seconds to get one more score before the break.

After a completion to Wireman for 13 yards, Davis stepped into another downfield shot to Jacoby Holland for a 42-yard touchdown strike to cap off the first half scoring and send Greenup into the locker room with a commanding 34-6 lead.

Greenup tacked on two more scores in the second half.

The first came about three minutes into the half when Eric Campbell scored on a 3-yard run. Campbell set up his own score on the prior play when he took a swing pass from Davis and turned it into a 39-yard gain.

Landry Lewis capped off the Greenup scoring with a screen pass from Davis and went down the home sideline for 22 yards to balloon the score out to 48-6 just 56 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Fleming added the final score of the game on a 7-yard run from Martin.

The Musketeers will be back at home for their district opener where they will face undefeated Ashland.
