Vikings roll off 48 first quarter points to breeze past Knights

WILLOW WOOD — Short fields and takeaways were the trend on Friday night for Symmes Valley, as the Vikings scored off of three turnovers and had their other scoring drives start in opponent territory to rout the Fairfield Christian Knights 48-7.

"Our offense got some short fields to work with early on and we were very efficient at taking advantage of it," said Vikings coach Ben Ferguson. "I think we were in their territory every drive and only ran 4 plays at the most on each scoring drive."

A return on the opening kickoff by Asher Maynard that reached the Knights 49 seemingly spelled out what kind of night this would be for the Vikings.

In just three plays, the Vikings reached in end zone when Bronx Carpenter hit Beckhem Roth on a short hitch play and Roth was able to split four defenders by himself for a 27 yard score to make it 7-0.

A squib kick from Miguel Ferriera managed to roll around and get recovered by Symmes Valley, giving the ball back to the offense at the FCA 42.

Four plays later, it was Carpenter again slinging a screen pass out to Jackson Fields and the junior receiver beat everyone to the front pylon to make it 14-0 less than two minutes into the game.

From that point, the Vikings just poured it on.

Following a FCA fumble, Maynard added to his rushing touchdown total on the season with a 10-yard run. Then Levi Russell caught 26-yard pass from Carpenter off a double move to make it 27-0 at the 7:26 mark of the first frame.

Roth would score the only defensive score of the night, intercepting a swing pass — after Anthony Lama was hit as he was throwing by Maynard — and bolting 57 yards the other way for the score.

"That was really a great effort by two players. First, it was Asher (Maynard) get in there to hit their quarterback and change his throwing motion. Then it was all Beckem from there just reading the play right and being there to take the ball and go."

Carpenter would throw his fourth and final touchdown pass of the night, hitting Andrew Issacs over the middle and Issacs turned upfield untouched for a 20 yard scoring play.

The Vikings final score would come on an option play where Carpenter kept the ball and finally flipped it out to Fields who went the final 25 yards into the end zone for the score to make it 48-0 with just 1:25 remaining in the first quarter.

FCA would snap the shutout in the third quarter with an 8-play drive that culminated with Lama throwing a pass to Lucas Brinley who climbed the ladder to make a 22-yard catch to round out the scoring on the night.

The Vikings will open up Southern Ohio Conference play next Thursday night at Green.
