Offense takes off early as Rockets down Flyers

IRONTON — There’s a cliche that says it’s not how you start but how you finish. But that’s not always true.

The St. Joseph Flyers played Wellston even the final 6 innings, but the Golden Rockets started with a 7-run first inning to post a 10-3 win on Tuesday.

Wellston (13-8) got 6 of its 12 hits in the big first inning.

Braxton Ingalls, Dalton Barnett and Caden Matthews all singled to start the game for a 2-0 lead.

Kyson Witt walked and then Aiden Fenwick singled and Carson McCorkle walked before a pop out to the catcher. But Cayden Matthews and Ingalls singled and with the aid of an error the Rockets added 5 more runs.

Wellston went up 9-0 in the fourth inning.

McCorkle walked, moved up on a wild pitch and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Lung. Greyson Sites was hit by a pitch, Ingalls walked and Barnett singled.

The Rockets got their final run in the top of the sixth inning when Lung walked and Sites, Cayden Matthews, and Ingall all singled.

St. Joseph (10-6) got all its runs in the bottom of the sixth after the first batter grounded out.

Blake Medinger singled, moved up on a ground out and scored when Barrett Waginger reached on an error, Mason Weber doubled, and Beckham Waginger doubled.

After moving up on a ground out, Waginger scored on a two-out hit by Braydon Neal.

Neal was 2-3 with an RBI for the Flyers while Barrett Wagnger, Beckham Waginger and Medinger were all 1-3, Mason Weber was 1-4 with an RBI. Beckham Waginger also had an RBI.

Ingalls got the win with a 6-hitter and also went 3-4 at the plate. Barnett also went 3-4 with 3 RBI.
