AID — Summer is the time for vacations, relaxing, having fun and just enjoying the warm, sunny weather.
But for Tanner Corn, it was a time to make a career decision.
This past summer proved to be a time of a major decision that will impact his life in the future as the Symmes Valley Vikings’ senior baseball standout decided to sign a letter-of-intent with the Capital University Comets.
“During the summer I was talking to Shawnee and then they just stopped talking and I kind of got my hopes down,” said Corn.
It was then that Corn decided to attend a baseball showcase and he caught the eye of a Capital coach who contacted him.
“I got a call a little bit later and I went up and visited them and they were above and beyond my expectations. They really cared about your development as a student and an athlete and I just knew it was the right choice,” said Corn.
Several other schools have reached out to Corn recently but he remained adamant about his decision.
“It’s nothing that could change my mind,” said Corn.
Although Corn will be an incoming freshman and going against older veteran players, he sees a window of opportunity to possibly contribute in his rookie season.
“They were talking about losing six or seven seniors that pitched, so they probably picked up four or five extra pitchers,” said Corn. “They were just letting me know that I would be right in the loop when I got there and help me develop throughout the year.”
Corn — a versatile athlete who also played basketball — plays shortstop when he’s not pitching and he is still hopeful that the coaches at Capital will look at him as a two-way player.
“I’m just hoping to go out this year and prove that I can pitch and field and change their mind,” said Corn.
Corn offered thanks to coaches Chad Renfroe and Eric Holland for their help during his developmental years.
“I’ve been blessed to have two coaches along with my dad (Shawn) who have been there my entire time through middle school and high school and just the emotional help they’ve brought to me,” he said.
Corn plans to major in exercise science.
