CHESAPEAKE — For Symmes Valley, it's a new year with the same results.
The Vikings' high-octane offense scored early and often, while the defense came up with 5 turnovers to rout the Chesapeake Panthers 55-13 in the annual "Battle for the Paddle" game at Phil Davis Field on Friday night.
The Vikings piled up the offense, out-gaining the Panthers 449-135 in total offense and 18 to 6 in first downs.
Junior quarterback Bronx Carpenter showed the hot hand early, throwing for 238 yards in the first quarter and completing his first 12 passes of the game to help the Vikings score on their first 8 possessions.
The Vikings crossed the goal line three times in the opening frame in a variety of ways.
The first was an 8-play drive that was capped off with a 5-yard pass from Carpenter to Beckham Roth. Next was a 4-play drive that saw Jackson Fields make a double-move to get free on a 39-yard pass. Then after forcing another 3-and-out, Carpenter threw a 58-yard strike to Andrew Issacs on the ensuing play to make it 21-0.
Fields and Issacs finished with multi-touchdown games, with Issacs catching an 8-yard pass early in the second to finish with 73 yards receiving. Fields finished the night with a game-high 6 catches for 137 yards and caught two more TD passes of 41 and 24.
Levi Russell had the other touchdown reception of 27-yard pass to help make the lead 48-0.
Running back Asher Maynard scored the lone rushing touchdown for the Vikings on a 4-yard rumble following a fumble recovery that Maynard fell on at the Panther 6 just two plays prior.
The defense had four players come up with interceptions in the game with Issacs coming up with the first pick late in the first quarter around midfield. Fields, Roth and Jordan Nance tallied the other three.
Symmes Valley led 55-0 at the break.
The Panthers (0-1) were able to find some offensive footing in the second half and record the final two scores of the night.
KJ McLain hit Aden Nester-Howard on the outside on a 4th down pass, that Nester-Howard turned up field and weaved his way 45 yards for the score and to break the shutout.
The final score came on a 1-yard run from Marquis Branch to round out the final score.
The Vikings (1-0) will face the Meigs Marauders in their home opener on Friday. The Panthers will be on the road against the Minford Falcons.
