Lyons' sac fly gives Flyers win over Hornets in 11 innings

IRONTON — For baseball players, the St. Joseph Flyers are pretty good at marathons.

The Flyers pushed across a run in the 11th inning as they outlasted the Coal Grove Hornets 3-2 in a non-league game on Monday.

St. Joseph (13-6) got the winning run in the 11th with one out when Beckham Waginger singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carson Lyons.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mason Weber walked and Beckham Waginger and Carson Lyons followed with base hits.

Coal Grove (7-13) tied the game in the fourth.

Caden Turner singled, stole second and scored on a two-out hit by Karder Keaton and an error on the play.

The Hornets went up 2-1 in the fifth when Landon Riley reached on a two-out error, stole second and scored on a hit by Braden Schug.

St. Joseph tied the game in the sixth inning.

With one out, Beckham Waginger reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and raced home on a hit by Lyons.

Coal Grove also threatened in the sixth when Keaton doubled, Leland Smith singled, and Rylan Smith walked to load the bases with two outs.

But Flyers’ pitcher Carson Willis registered a strikeout to end the inning.

Barrett Waginger got the win in relief as he went the final 3.1 innings allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Willis started and went 7.2 innings with 8 hits, one earned run, 5 strikeouts and 5 walks. Willis threw 126 pitches with 63 for strikes.

Lyons went 2-4 and drove in all 3 St. Joseph runs. Ian Whaley was 2-4 with a double, Evan Aldridge was 2-4, Beckham Waginger 2-5, and Braydon Neal and Willis each 1-4.

Derek Bloomfield was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he went the entire 10.2 innings. He gave up one earned run and 10 hits with 7 strikeouts and one walk. He threw 125 pitches with 91 being strikes.

Keaton was 2-5 with a double for the Hornets with Turner 2-6 and a double, Schug 1-5 with an RBI, Leland McKnight 1-3, Kaden Murphy and Brisen Collins both 1-4, and Bloomfield 1-5.
