Pointers win 1st and 3rd quarters to get past Hornets

SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers got a good start ini each half which led to a good finish.

The Pointers combined to outscore Coal Grove by 17 points in the first and third quarters as they beat the Hornets 66-55 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.

James Carey scored 5 points including a 3-pointer as six different players scored as the Pointers took a 17-9 first quarter lead.

Caden Turner hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points for Cal Grove.

The Hornets cut the deficit to 29-22 at the half as Bronson Guy hit a triple and scored 5 points and Rylan Smith also hit a trey.

Scheyer Graham hit a 3-pointer as he scored 5 points for the Pointers.

South Point began to open up some breathing room in the third quarter by taking a 45-31 lead.

Davon Lewis scored 6 points while Hunter Chinn and Caesyn Pope got 4 each.

Smith hit another 3-pointer as five different Cole Grove players scored.

The Pointers (8-12, 5-8) were able to clinch the win as they converted 13 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Guy and Smith each drilled a pair of 3-pointers with Smith scoring 9 points and Guy 8.

Pope scored 14 points to lead the Pointers. Lewis got 12 points and Chinn added 10.

Coal Grove (5-14, 1-11) was led by Guy with 16 points and Smith had 15,
