Lady Hornets get big scoring halves from Anson, Lively to beat Lady Buckeyes

NELSONVILLE — Using the inside game or the outside game didn’t matter to the Coal Grove Lady Hornets.

Coal Grove used the scoring of center Jenna Anson in the first half and relied on the outside shooting of Emma Lively in the second half to beat the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes 52-41 on Saturday.

Anson scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half and Lively 13 of her 19 points in the second half as Coal Grove improved to 8-1.

“It was a two-point game at the half and we hadn’t made a three-point shot after taking a bunch,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller. “Emma settled down and hit three 3s in the second half.

“They had no answer for Jenna in the first half. They started doubling and tripling her in the second half.”

Coal Grove led 9-5 early but the Buckeyes used a couple of 3-pointers by Cam Jolley to take a 13-10 first quarter lead.

Anson scored to tie the game at 15-all and then got a steal that she turned into a 3-point play and it was 18-15.

Anson gave Coal Grove a 23-19 lead only to have Madi Pidcock score to cut the deficit to 23-21 at the break.

Lively hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the second half as the Lady Hornets went up 33-26. Pidcock hit a triple and two foul shots to make it 33-31 but Coal Grove went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and led 39-31.

Lively’s trifecta made it 42-31 to start the fourth quarter. Pidcock’s two foul shots cut the lead to 46-39 but Izzy Kitts made a basket and two free throws for a 48-39 lead with 1:44 to play.

Anson also grabbed 15 rebounds and Karli Shore had 11 as Coal Grove held a 46-30 rebound advantage.

Pidcock led the Lady Buckeyes (3-6) with 21 points and she had 8 rebounds.
