Vance, Pointers roll past Panthers

CHESAPEAKE — The South Point Pointers go to Vance when they want to advance.


The Pointers advanced past the Chesapeake Panthers 41-18 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday thanks to Landon Vance who ran 27 times for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.


Vance scored on a 20-yard run with 8:02 to play in the first quarter. Logan McFann kicked the conversion and the Pointers took a 7-0 lead they never relinquished.


Chesapeake (0-7, 0-3) answered when Jayden Washington returned the kickoff 89 for the score The kick was blocked and the Pointers led 7-6.


A sack by the Panthers’ Philip Thacker on a fourth down at the Chesapeake 15 halted a drive. But the Panthers fumbled the ball and the Pointers recovered at the 1-yard line. Robert Napier scored 2 plays later and it was 13-6.


Another Chesapeake fumble set up the Pointers’ next score as South Point recovered the ball at the 5-yard line. Vance scored on the next play and it was 19-6 with 2:14 left in the half.


It took the Pointers just 2 plays to score starting the second half as K.J. McLain hit James Carey for 8 yards and then found McFann for a 56-yard touchdown play. Vance ran for the conversion and it was 27-6 with 11:07 on the clock.


Chesapeake was forced to put but Jackson Splitter got off a 53-yard kick to pin the Pointers at the 2-yard line. A pass play on first down was intercepted by Aden Parrott giving the Panthers the ball at the 20.


Jon-Cooper Barker ran for 14 yards and then on first down and then ran the final 6 yards 2 plays later and it was 27-12 at the 7:41 mark.


South Point (3-4, 1-2) answered with a 65-yard, 10-play drive capped by a 29-yard pass from McLain to Caesyn Pope who got behind the secondary on a post route. McFann’s kick made it-34-12 at the 5:08 mark of the quarter.


The Panthers came right back as Peyton Muncy ran 19 yards and Washington ran for 31 to the 4-yard line. Barker went the final yard 3 plays later and it was 34-18 with 3 minutes on the clock.


Chesapeake got to the 13-yard line later only to suffer an interception. The Pointers iced the game as Vance ran for 28 yards and then broke down the middle for a 62-yard scoring run.


McLain was 21 of 30 passing for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Pointers had 432 yards of total offense.

The Panthers had a balanced attack as they got 242 total yards.


On Friday, South Point visits Coal Grove and Chesapeake goes to Gallipolis.
