COAL GROVE — In a game of big plays, the Coal Grove Hornets were just a little bit bigger.

And better.

The Hornets scored 5 touchdowns on double digit yardage from 13 to 80 yards as they outscored the KIPP Columbus Jaguars 40-26 on Friday in a non-league game.

Coal Grove (4-2) got big plays as usual from Kaden Murphy as he ran 26 times for 233 yards and 4 touchdowns of 13, 23, 34 and 67 yards. Fullback Caden Turner ran for 33 yards and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass while quarterback Rylan Smith had an 80-yard touchdown that sealed the outcome.

Coal Grove had 362 yards rushing and finished with 395 total yards.

The Jaguars (0-7) put up some big numbers as well with 206 yards rushing and 146 passing for 352 total yards. Dushun Bosley ran 9 times for 142 yards and a touchdown and he also caught 2 passes for 38 yards.

KIPP quarterback Tim Gladney was 10-of-27 passing but suffered 2 interceptions. He was just 5-of-17 in the second half with 2 interceptions and 45 yards. Bosley was held to 24 yards on 5 carries in the second half.

KIPP forced Coal Grove to punt on the opening series of the game and then scored 5 plays later on a 16-yard pass from Gladney to Malachi Anderson. Gladney threw to  Jayden Quartey for the conversion and it was 8-0 at the 6:42 mark.

A short punt gave the Jaguars the ball at the Hornets’ 38-yard line. A penalty moved the ball back 10 yards but Bosley made a nice run down the sidelines and scored as the lead went to 14-0 at the 10:39 mark.

KIPP was penalized on the touchdown for an unsportsmanlike penalty and Coal Grove returned the kickoff to the Jaguars 40.

It took 5 plays for the Hornets to score as Murphy went the final 13 yards and it was 14-6 with 8:17 on the clock.

After a KIPP punt, the Hornets drove 73 yards in 11 plays capped by Smith’ 25-yard pass to Turner who made a nice over-the-shoulder catch going into the end zone. The conversion failed and the Hornets trailed 14-12.

But a good kickoff return to the Coal Grove 47 set up a quick score for the Jaguars who needed just 2 plays to score. Gladney threw 35 yards to Bosley and the final 12 to Trevon Mason as it was 20-12 with just 51 seconds left in the half.

KIPP elected to go for the first down on a fourth-and-3 at its own 46 but a pass went incomplete.

It took just 6 plays later that Murphy got loose on a 23-yard touchdown run and the Hornets were within 20-18.

Just 2 plays into KIPP’s next possession, Case Webb picked off a pass and Coal Grove had the ball at the Jaguars’ 34.

Murphy broke a couple of tackles, went down the sideline and then cut back into the end zone and Coal Grove had its first leadoff the game.

Turner ran for the conversion and it was 26-20 with 5:08 left in the third quarter.

After trading punts, Coal Grove got the ball at its own 20-yard line. But it isn’t as far from the end zone as one might think with Kaden Murphy in the backfield.

After he ran for 13 yards, he then broke free and outran the defense for 67 yards and the touchdown as the lead went to 32-20 with 10:41 left.

The Jaguars began a drive to the Coal Grove 22, but Murphy intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the threat.

Smith faked to Murphy on the ensuing play and kept it and raced 80 yards virtually untouched for the score. Smith passed to Turner for the conversion and it was 40-20 with 6:13 left.

KIPP still had a big play left as Bosley returned the kickoff 88 yards for the touchdown to get within 40-26.

Following a Coal Grove punt, the Jaguars drove to the Coal Grove 20-yard line only to be stopped on downs. The Hornets took a knee as the clock ran out.

Coal Grove will host South Point next Friday.
