Rushing duo spark Redmen to next round of D6 playoffs

PEDRO — The Rock Hill Redmen might have been in passing formations, but make no mistake that their game plan was to run the ball.


The Redmen rushed 55 times for 359 yards as they ran past the Dayton Christian Warriors 47-28 on Friday in the first round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division 6 playoffs.


Kelan Davidson ran 14 times for 128 yards and a touchdown while Brady Murrell carried 21 times for 122 yards and a score to lead the ground game.


Rock Hill (7-4) will now play at Coldwater in the Region 24 quarterfinals next Friday.


The Warriors (6-5) tried to keep pace with the Rock Hill offense by going to the air. Dayton Christian was 14 of 25 for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns but suffered 4 interceptions. The Warriors only ran for 120 yards.


Brody Schmidt was 12 of 29 passing for 187 yards and 2 scores but was intercepted 3 times. Cameron Harman was 2 of 6 for 71 yards and an interception when he took over after Schmidt was injured in the fourth quarter.

Hartman caught 3 passes for 76 yards and ran for a score. Caden Shepherd had 7 receptions for 143 yards.


The Warriors elected to go for the first down at their own 49-yard line but came up short to start the game. Rock Hill took over and 3 plays later Aaron Workman bolted 38 yards up the middle for the touchdown.


Cameron Howard kicked the conversion and it was 7-0.


An interception by Connor Moore 2 plays later gave the Redmen the ball at the Warriors’ 40.


Rock Hill used 5 running plays to cover the distance with Yaden Bailey going 3 yards for the score and it was 13-0 with 6:13 on the first quarter clock.


Dayton Christian answered with a 78-yard, 11-play march that ended on a 13-yard pass from Schmidt to Braylen Baffle and it was 13-6.


Rock Hill failed to convert a fourth down play and Dayton Christian took over at the 35.


The Warriors drove for the score as Schmidt threw 4 yards to Biffle and it was 13-12 with 9:42 left in the half.


Following a Rock Hill punt, the Warriors went 76 yards in just 6 plays with Jacob Cutler running 5 yards for the score. Schmidt ran for the conversion and a 20-13 lead.


The drive was highlighted by a 43-yard pass to Asa Crocket.


Rock Hill came right back to tie the game in just 3 plays as Murrell got free and raced 34 yards for the touchdown. Howard’s kick made it 20-all with 5 minutes left in the half.


The Redmen took the lead for good to start the second half with a 65-yard, 8-play drive that a culminated on Murrell’s 5-yard run.


Murrell had a 24-yard run to start the drive and a Jarrod Bailey 14-yard pass to Braylon McClellan were the key plays.


The Warriors drove to the Rock Hill 2-yard line, but Daniel Medinger batted a passing attempt and Bailey picked off the ball and halted the threat.


Bailey returned the ball to the 37 and the Redmen scored 8 plays later as Bailey ran the final yard to make it 33-20.


McClellan intercepted a pass on the next play at the Warriors 48 and a 43-yard run by Davidson got the ball to the 5 where he scored on the next play and Howard’s kick made it 40-20.


The Warriors elected to go for it on fourth down at their own 28 and failed to convert.


Rock Hill had no problem scoring as Bailey went 8 yards for the TD and it was 47-20.


A 58-yard catch and run pass play from Hartman to Shepherd set up a 5-yard scoring run by Hartman. Shepherd and Hartman teamed up on the conversion and it was 47-28.


Dayton Christian recovered the onside kickoff but an interception by McClellan ended the threat at the 21-yard line.
