Lyons, Weber each collect hat trick as Flyers advance in tournament play

IRONTON — In the movie Rio Bravo, there was a scene in which they played the El Deguello song which means "no mercy."

Well, there was mercy in this game but only due to the rules as the St. Joseph Flyers blanked the Portsmouth Clay Panthers 8-0 in the Division 5 district quarter finals on Thursday.

Mason Weber scored with 32:58 left in the game when he got a pass from Jack Whaley off a crossing pass from the right side to enact the mercy rule.

The game started slow but picked up right after Carson Lyons scored off a pass from Weber on an entry pass assist in the box with 26:12 on the first half clock.

Sophia Rowe scored on an unassisted rebound goal with 12:29 on the clock and it was 2-0.

With 9:18 left in the half, Weber scored again off the through ball assist from Whaley.

At the 8:34 mark, Whaley got a rare goal instead of an assist  as Barrett Waginger made an entry pass in the box.

The lead went to 5-0 with just 49 seconds left as Lyons scored on a free kick with a through ball assist by Eli Whaley.

Lyons got a crossing pass from Jack Whaley less than 3 minutes into the second half and it was 6-0.

Weber scored an unassisted goal off a rebound to make it 7-0 at the 33:48 mark and then ended the game 50 seconds later.

Weber led the way with 3 goals and an assist, Lyons scored 3 goals and Jack Whaley had one goal and 3 assists.

Flyers' goalkeeper Bekcham Waginger had 2 saves as Clay was limited to just 3 shots. The Flyers took 18 shots with 13 on goal.

The Panthers' goalkeeper Colby Secrist had 5 saves.

St. Joseph (13-4-1) will now play Lucasville Valley in the district semifinals Wednesday at Zane Trace High School.

Clay ended the season 8-7-1.
