PORTSMOUTH — When the Portsmouth Trojans leave the Ohio Valley Conference after next season, the South Point Pointers won’t be shedding any tears.
Ever since joining the OVC in 2015, the Trojans have never lost to the Pointers and it happened again on Friday as Portsmouth topped South Point 41-13.
Portsmouth (6-3, 4-2) jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead as Marquez Locklear threw touchdown passes for 20 and 25 yards to Landon Malone and then kept the ball and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with just 4 seconds left in the quarter.
The Pointers (3-6, 1-4) got on the scoreboard via their defense as Robert Napier had a 35-yard scoop and score. Logan McFann’s conversion kick made it 21-7 with just 3:32 left in the half.
The Pointers had threatened earlier in the quarter with a 17-play, 80-yard drive to the Portsmouth 1-yard line only to have the drive stall.
Portsmouth made 3 goal line stands in the half including a missed field goal that was partially blocked with 19 seconds left in the half.
South Point had more frustration in the third quarter as the Pointers drove from their own 15 to the Trojans 2-yard line on a 9-play drive only to be stopped at the 2.
Portsmouth managed to open up a 28-7 lead in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Trevin Brooks with 2:30 left in the quarter.
The lead grew to 34-7 with 6:14 to play when Andrew Cole caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Locklear.
South Point got on the scoreboard again when Caesyn Pope caught a 16-yard pass from K.J. McLain with 2;54 to play.
A 33-yard touchdown run by Jamarkus Parker with only 42 seconds left completed the scoring.
The Pointers finished with 292 total yards with 204 coming through the air as McLain was 19 of 33 with a touchdown and an interception. Napier led the ground game with 67 yards on 10 carries. Leading rusher Landon Vance had 10 carries for 48 yards but did not play in the second half due to an injury.
Portsmouth had 432 total yards with 307 on the ground led by Fernando Poxes who carried 27 times for 187 yards as he went over 1,000 yards for the season.
Locker was 7 of 9 passing for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns. Camron Williams caught 3 passes for 57 yards and Malone had 2 catches for 45 yards, both for scores.
Next Friday, South Point will host Gallipolis and Portsmouth visits Ironton.
