SCIOTOVILLE — A double-double from Zane Dressel helped the Saint Joseph Flyers get the offesnive boost needed to roll their way to a win over the Sciotoville East Tartans 60-35 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Friday night.
Going into the game, the Flyers were already without Carson Willis, who was being held out from an injury. Then during the first quarter, sophomore forward Beckham Waginger went down with a lower body injury and was held out for the remainder of the night.
The loss of two starters quickly altered the Flyers game plan.
"We were down without our two bigs tonight and we had to try and adapt," said Flyers coach Tait Matney. "Rebounding-wise, we struggled in the first quarter, but we settled down and got the jitters out. Eventually we got the looks we wanted in the press and got in transition, which is something you really want to do in this gym."
Dressel caught fire to headline the Flyers scoring attack with 23 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Eli Whaley knocked down 6 shots from the field to earn 13 points and 7 boards.
Lindon Williams kept the Tartans close with a couple of runners in the lane to close out the quarter, leaving the Flyers ahead 10-8.
During the second quarter, the Flyers (6-8, 42 SOC) finally took over with a 16-0 run.
Dressel scored 7 points during the second and ignited the scoring run with a cut to the basket for a lay up with an assist from Carter Johnson. Whaley added a pair of mid range jumpers during the run as well.
"The past couple games our 3-point shooting hasn't done well. But getting these younger guys to get to the rim and to the free throw line was important," said Matney. "Eli didn't take himself away from the 3-point line, but he definitely did what we'd been looking for. Then Zane had the kind of game that we've been looking for for a while. He did a great job tonight."
East (1-11, 0-6) finally halted the run on a pair of free throws from Tanner Baughman and the Tartans closed the first half out 2 more buckets to cut into the lead, but the Flyers still took a 26-14 lead into the locker room.
The scoring picked up on both sides during the third, but the Flyers still outscored East 22-14 in the frame.
Dressel went off for another 10 during the third and bookended the quarter with 3-point plays. Barrett Waginger scored 5 points and Eli Whaley added another 4 points to his total.
Tycyn Pernell turned in a big third quarter for East, scoring 7 points and coming up with 6 steals.
In the fourth, the Flyers continued to pull away, getting 7 points from Gus Listerman off the bench to lead Saint Joseph.
The Tartans were led on the stat sheet by Lindon Williams with 11 points. Tycyn Pernell finished with 9 points an 10 steals.
