Waginger, Whaley key Flyers win over Tartans

IRONTON — Forget WW standing for Wild Wings. For the St. Joseph Flyers, it stood for Waginger and Whaley on Friday night.

Barrett Waginger scored 15 points and had 3 assists while Eli Whaley scored 14 points to go with 3 rebounds as the Flyers rolled past the Sciotoville East Tartans 63-25 in a Southern Ohio Conference 1 game.

Zane Dressel finished with 8 points and 5 steals and Beckham Waginger got 9 points and 4 steals for the Flyers (2-5, 1-1).

Carson Willis added 6 points and 4 steals as St. Joseph got a season-high 18 steals as a team.

The Flyers flew out of the starting gate and took a 19-6 first quarter lead as Barrett Waginger scored 7 points, Whaley drained a pair of 3-pointers, Beckham Waginger hit a trifecta and had 5 points and Willis added 4 more points.

St. Joseph extended the lead to 39-14 at the half as Barrett Waginger scored 11 points including a 3-pointer and Whaley made the second of his four 3-pointers on the night.

The defense held East to just 4 points in the third quarter and opened up a 59-18 cushion.

Whaley knocked down another trifecta as he scored 5 points, Dressel and Carter Johnson scored 4 points each and Jon Sharp came off the bench to nail a 3-pointer.

Tanner Baughman scored 8 points for East (1-4, 0-1).

The Flyers host Coal Grove Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
