Willis' 26 points leads Flyers to key SOC win over Clay

PORTSMOUTH — In the early years of The Tonight Show, the host Johnny Carson did a bit where he was Carnac the Magnificent.

On Friday, the St. Joseph Flyers own Carson — Carson Willis — was pretty magnificent himself.

The Flyers’ senior center scored 26 points and had 8 rebounds as he helped spark a 64-37 rout of the Portsmouth Clay Panthers in a Southern Ohio Conference-1 game.

Barrett Waginger did pretty well for himself as he scored 17 points to go with 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Waginger scored 9 points including a 3-pointer and Willis scored 8 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 23-7 lead.

The Flyers (4-5, 2-1) kept the lead the same as each team scored 12 points in the second quarter. Willis and Waginger combined for 10 points and the lead was 35-19 at the half.

Colby Secrist scored 7 points in the quarter for Clay (3-7, 1-2).

St. Joseph extended the lead to 51-26 in the third quarter as Willis scored 8 points and Zane “Z-Man” Dressel drained a pair of 3-pointers.

Cade Munion scored 6 of Clay’s 7 points in the quarter.

Jon Sharp came off the bench to score 7 points including a 3-pointer for the Flyers in the fourth quarter with Willis adding 4 more.

Bryce Whitley scored 9 points in the quarter for the Panthers.
