Vikings use 2nd quarter scoring onslaught to rout Raiders

WILLOW WOOD — Much like last week, the touchdowns piled up. The problem for River Valley was that Symmes Valley was doing all the scoring.

The Symmes Valley Vikings scored the games' first 5 touchdowns — including a 36-point explosion in the second quarter — to rout the Raiders 55-27 on Friday night.

Much like last week, quarterback Bronx Carpenter continued to be a catalyst of the Viking offense, going 18-of-22 passing for 262 yards and four touchdowns. Carpenter also ran for a touchdown in the first quarter to make the score 13-0.

The top targets for Carpenter were teammates Jackson Fields and Beckam Roth, who both caught 5 balls apiece.

Fields finished with a game-high 105 yards and a touchdown. His last catch of the night turned out to be his best. On the play, Carpenter rolled out to his left and threw a deep bomb to Fields, and the sophomore laid out for the ball and made the catch around the Raider 33.

The catch wound up setting up Nance's second score.

Roth had 99 yards receiving, his second catch of the night turned out to be the first score of the night, when the freshman made an adjustment as the ball was in the air and made the catch in the end zone.

Also making his mark in the stat column was backup quarterback Jordan Nance, who was called into action to play wide receiver as key starters rested. Nance made the most of his position switch, scoring twice in as many catches. Both scores of 5- and 21-yards came in the second quarter.

Maynard bookended the second quarter scoring with rushing touchdowns of 14- and 2-yards, respectively. The sophomore's first touchdown came on the opening play of the frame, when he took a handoff off the left side, made a juke move to evade two defenders and cut through the heart of the defense into the end zone.

Maynard's second score with 8 seconds remaining gave the Vikings a 49-6 lead into the break.

With the running clock rule in effect to begin the second half, the Vikings emptied the bench.

The Raiders managed to stop the running clock early in the fourth quarter when Cordai Craycraft broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown to cut the deficit down to 49-20.

On the ensuing kickoff, Maynard returned the kick 62 yards to the Raider 11. Three plays later, Mason Adams walked in from 1-yard out to finish off the scoring for the Vikings.

River Valley was led offensively by quarterback Gary Perry, who did most of his damage on the ground with 15 carries for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns. Craycraft finished 87 yards on 7 carries to go along with his score.

Defensively, the Vikings were carried by the play of defensive tackle Tucker Ross and Maynard at linebacker.

Ross made his presence known on the first 2 offense plays of the game for River Valley, shedding his blocks and made two-consecutive stops for no gain. Maynard came up with 3 sacks on the night to ground any hopes of an aerial attack from the Raiders.

The Vikings will host the South Point Pointers next Friday night.
