Vikings split doubleheader with Tornadoes

RACINE — Symmes Valley's bats got going early on Saturday as the offense hammered out 15 hits and the Vikings rolled past the Southern Tornadoes 11-3 in game one of a doubleheader.


Bronx Carpenter highlighted the offensive effort, going 4-of-5 at the plate and driving in two runs. The Vikings also multi-hit games from Tanner Corn who went 3-4 and had 2 RBIs, Will Jones went 2-3 with 2 RBI's and a double, Andy Strow went 2-3 and 3 RBI's. Tanner Thompson, Asher Maynard, Braden Hankins and Gradee Holland each had a hit also.


The Vikings scored the games' first seven runs, getting an RBI base hit from Strow and a sacrifice fly from Corn to score a run in the first inning.


Symmes Valley added two more in the third, as Thompson drove in a run and Strow registered his second RBI single in the inning and later added another in the fifth help to push the Vikings lead out to 5-0.


Hankins picked up the win, going four and a third innings. Hankins gave up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 4.


Thompson came on in relief of Hankins in the fifth with the Vikings holding a 9-3 lead and later threatened to score even more with the bases loaded. But Thompson picked up one of his three strikeouts to end the inning.

A 5-run rally from Southern in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference as the Tornadoes came back to beat the Vikings 8-6 in the second game of the doubleheader.


The Tornadoes were able to get the bases loaded early and pieced together four hits during the rally to get the comeback win. Loudermilk drove in what would be the game-winning runs with a base hit into left to give the Tornadoes a two-run lead.


The Vikings were able to get a runner on base in the seventh, but Southern turned a double play to end the game and pick up the win.


Bronx Carpenter continued his hitting spree from the first game, going 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs. Tanner Thompson went 2-4 with a double. Andy Strow had a double and an RBI, and Asher Maynard had a hit and an RBI. Will Jones and Jackson Fields recorded singles and Braden Hankins doubled as well.


The Vikings (9-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Carpenter singled into left-center, scoring two runs.


In the fifth, the Vikings scored another pair of runs when Thompson scored and Maynard singled in a run to make it 6-3.
