NELSONVILLE — Coal Grove had a good start, but Nelsonville-York had the better finish.

The Hornets seemed in control to start the game but the Buckeyes ran off 34 unanswered points in a 34-6 win on Friday at Dave Boston Field.

Coal Grove (1-2) took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards in 12 plays — all on the ground — and capped by Caden Turner’s one-yard scoring run.

The conversion run failed and it was 6-0 with 3:58 on the clock.

The Buckeyes (3-0) answered with a 7-play, 61-yard drive that ended when Cameron Sullivan teamed up with Walker Stone on a 40-yard touchdown pass as the clock hit zero. Grant Elliott’s conversion kick gave the Buckeyes a 7-6 lead.

After a Coal Grove punt, Nelsonville-York went 90 yards in 8 plays including a 23-yard pass to Alec Thompson and a 34-yard scoring run by Austin Gautier with 5:22 on the clock.

Elliott’s kick made it 14-6.

The Hornets had a holding penalty that put them in a hole and a loss of 16 yards on a quarterback sack led to a punt.

The Buckeyes then went 66 yards in 9 plays that ended on a one-yard run by Sullivan and it was 21-6 at the half.

Coal Grove had a chance to cut into the deficit with a long drive from its own 14 to the Buckeyes 6-yard line. But on fourth-and-one, the Hornets fumbled and turned the ball over to the Buckeyes.

Nelsonville-York moved the ball out to the 20-yard line and Stone broke free on an 80-yard touchdown run that opened up a 28-6 lead.

Coal Grove lost the ball on the kickoff and the Buckeyes went 50 yards in 8 plays with Sullivan keeping the ball for a 14-yard scoring run with 4:58 to play to seal the outcome.

Coal Grove was limited to 189 total yards with 174 coming on the ground. Turner ran 18 times for 118 yards and Murphy carried 16 times for 73 yards.

The Buckeyes ended with 442 yards including 317 rushing. Gautier ran 19 times for 150 yards and Stone had 3 carries for 90 yards.

Sullivan ran 4 ties for 40 yards and was 7-of-9 passing for 102 yards and a score.

The Hornets will host Chesapeake on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
