SCIOTOVILLE — A committee of East running backs piled up 366 yards on the ground to give the Tartans their first win of the season over the Green Bobcats in a Southern Ohio Conference game at Allard Park/James "Snuffy" Smith Field on Thursday night.
The win snapped East's 13-game losing skid and marked their first win league play since 2023 when they defeated the Bobcats.
East coach Adam Bailey was elated to get a win for his kids.
"It's a relief. Everyone shows up every day and works hard. It's great to great to get the monkey off our back."
The Tartans ground attack was sparked early on by junior Lindon Williams, who compiled 91 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown run. Williams also converted 3 two-point conversion runs as well. Bobby Bryant was next with 6 carries for 84 yards, including a 56-yard burst to begin the third quarter for his score.
Williams had a much simpler answer for his feelings about getting their first win.
"It feels amazing."
"That was kind of our plan. Obviously, we're thin and we don't have a lot of kid, so we were hoping by committee we'd be successful that way," said Bailey. "I'm proud of all of them. Glad they all toward the end of the season had success and hope it can build momentum for next year."
After East (1-7, 1-3 SOC-1) successfully executed an onside kick to begin the game, Williams put the Tartans ahead with a 2 yard run with 9:33 to go in the opening frame.
"Coach told us to give it our all, just run hard. You know, do our assignments and run hard," said Williams.
The Bobcats looked as though they would respond with a score of their own on their first possession, but came up short.
Green (0-8, 0-4) converted a 3rd-and-8 on a 38-yard scamper from running back Leland Blevins, who made a cutback along the far sideline and nearly hit pay dirt, getting tackled at the East 2.
But the Bobcats couldn't finish off the drive, as the Tartans defense bent but didn't break when a fourth down pass from Elijah Evans fell incomplete in the end zone.
Green coach Shane Colvin felt the goal line stand was the turning point in the game.
"That's something we'd practiced all week. We just didn't execute it right. Maybe we should've ran the ball, but we felt we needed to kick the ball outside and it just didn't work out. But we still have to execute better."
The Bobcats trailed just 6-0 after the first quarter, but things unraveled for them in the second.
Isiah White bookended the quarter with two touchdowns. The first was a 25 yard run on the first play of the period. Then White picked up a fumble and ran it back 45 yards to make the score 38-0.
Levi Boyd and Tann Baughman each added touchdowns during the quarter as well.
The Bobcats we led offensively by Evans, who finished the night completing 10 of 28 passes for 159 yards.
Kaleb Mutters had a game-high 5 catches for 54 yards. Riddick Jenkins had 4 catches for 43 yards. Leland Blevins caught 2 balls for a game-high 62 yards.
The Bobcats return home next Friday for their season finale against Eastern Pike. East will be back at home against Notre Dame.
