Saint Joseph golfers advance to district in D3; Rock Hill's Simpson advances individually

PIKETON — The Five at Five.


No, it’s not a Fox News program. These would be the five members of the St. Joseph Flyers’ golf team combining to finish fifth in the Division 3 sectional golf tournament at Big Beaver Creek Golf Course.


With the fifth place finish, the Flyers will now advance to the district tournament for the second straight season.


The district tournament will be Monday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.


Waterford won the tournament with a 309 score followed by Portsmouth West at 324, South Webster 345, Racine Southern 345 and the Flyers qualified with a 352 team score.


Portsmouth Clay was sixth at 366, the Rock Hill Redmen and Green Bobcats 382, Belpre 390, the Symmes Valley Vikings 416, Miller 425 and Beaver Eastern 440.


St. Joseph was led by sophomore Christopher Phillips who shared medalist honors with Reese Lang of Waterford. Phillips had rounds of 38 and 35.


Flyers’ freshman Mitchell Heighton shot rounds of 43-45 for an 88 total. Senior Carson Willis carded a 95 on rounds of 46-49, sophomore Peyton Ford shot 51-45 for a 96 score and junior Jadyn Fields shot identical rounds of 50 for a 100 total.


The five individual qualifiers were Lincoln Shamblin of South Gallia with a 75, Ben Simpson of Rock Hill and Maddox Bolyard of Miller each with an 81, Dirk Walton of Trimble 83 and Dawson King of Reedsville Eastern 83.


Simpson shot rounds of 42 and 39 for his 81.


The Symmes Valley Vikings were led by junior Josh Gibson with a 93 on rounds of 44-49, senior Kaiden Ellison went 51-43 for a 94, junior Mason Campbell shot 61-53 for 114, senior Connor Cade was 53-62 for 115, and senior Noah Hutchison went 72-65 for 137.


Seniors Jonathan Knapp and Brennan Renison both shot  92 to pace Green. Knapp had rounds of 50-42 and Renison 47-45. Senior Caleb Lewis went 52-45 for 97 and sophomore Reagan Ibarra was 53-48 for 101.
