Redmen find different ways to score, comeback against Cavaliers

PEDRO — How do I score? Let me count the ways.

The Rock Hill Redmen scored touchdowns running, receiving, kickoff return, fumble recovery and interceptions as they beat the Cincinnati Purcell Marian Cavaliers 39-26 on Friday.

The Redmen had only 2 touchdowns by their offense as they survived an outstanding rushing performance by the Cavaliers’ Zyohn Gillespie.

Rock Hill (5-1) had 199 total yards of offense to the Cavaliers’ 450 yards due, mainly Gillespie who rushed 26 times for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Gillespie ran 19 times for 218 yards in the first half but carried just 7 times for 65 yards in the second half as the Cavaliers elected to throw the ball 17 times. Purcell Marian was only 15-of-37 through the air for 154 yards with 3 interceptions, 2 going for Rock Hill touchdowns.

The Cavaliers drove to the Rock Hill 10-yard line to start the game only to stall.

After a Rock Hill punt, the Cavaliers had the ball at the 46 and on second down quarterback Quindel Phillips was stripped of the ball trying to pass and Brady Murrell scooped up the ball and ran 35 yards for the touchdown. Cameron Howard kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Purcell Marian came back to score on a 5-yard run by Gillespie to cap a 53-yard, 3-play drive with Gillespie running 21 yards for the score. Terron Vaughn ran for the conversion as the Cavaliers took an 8-7 lead.

Purcell Marian recovered a Rock Hill fumble on the kickoff and scored 5 plays later on a 1-yard run by Gillespie and it was 14-7.

The Cavaliers recovered an onside kickoff at the 49 and a 43-yard run by Gillespie set up his 5-yard scoring run and it was 20-8.

Rock Hill cut the deficit to 20-13 when Aaron Workman recovered a fumble. A 15-yard penalty moved the ball to the 21 and the Redmen scored 3 plays later on Yaden Bailey’s 8-yard run.

Another fumble recovery gave the Redmen the ball at the 46. A 28-yard pass to Cash Lyons and a 13-yard scoring pass to  Braylon McClelland got the Redmen within 20-19 with 41 seconds left in the half.

McClelland returned the second half kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown as the Redmen took a 26-20 lead.

Purcell Marian (2-4) drove to the 12-yard line only to throw 4 straight incomplete passes with 7:29 to play.

Rock Hill was forced to punt and the Cavaliers had the ball at the 33. But on third down at the 28-yard line, Phillips was being chased and threw the ball on the run, but Carson Doolin picked off a pass and returned it 26 yards for the score and the lead was now 32-20 with 2:57 to play.

A 25-yard run by Phillips and a 25-yard pass to Vaughn as the Cavaliers got within 32-26.

Rock Hill was forced to punt yet again with time running out. The Cavaliers got the ball at their own 11 and a penalty moved the ball back to the 6. But McClelland picked off a pass and returned it 42 yards for the score as Rock Hill went ahead 39-26.

McClelland scored 3 touchdowns 3 different ways: receiving, interception, kickoff return. He had 2 receptions for 44 yards.

Rock Hill will host Gallipolis on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
