Mohawks Take Early Lead in SOC Race

WILLOW WOOD — A 2-run homer by Andrew Nichols highlighted a fast start by Northwest and the Mohawks walked away with a 9-4 win over the Symmes Valley Vikings in the Southern Ohio Conference opener on Wednesday.
Blake Fenton pitched a complete game for Northwest, giving up just 2 earned runs on 10 hits. Fenton also struck out 6 batters in the game.
Tanner Corn took the loss for Symmes Valley, surrendering 8 runs on 9 hits. Gradee Holland came in for relief, holding the Mohawks to just 2 hits and a run in 3 innings of work.
Northwest got two runs across in the top of the first, when Payton Bell doubled into left to lead off the game. Then Chase Kingery followed with a triple to give the Mohawks a 1-0 lead. Levi Shepard singled in Kingery to double the lead.
Kingery, who finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate, drove in another run in the second with a single into left field to make it 3-0.
Northwest (2-1, 1-0 SOC) took control of the game in the third on a 2-run homer by Andrew Nichols and Austin Smith scored later in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
The Vikings scratched a run across home in the bottom of the inning, as Bronx Carpenter lined a single into left field to score Braden Hankins.
Symmes Valley (4-1, 0-1) scored 2 more in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Tanner Thompson earned one of his three hits on the day with a single into right to drive home Carpenter. Then Will Jones singled in Thompson.
Both team would each tally a run in the seventh to round out the final score.
Carpenter finished 1-4 at the plate, Thompson went 3-4, Jones 2-3, Corn 1-4, Andy Strow 1-3, and Asher Maynard went 2-3.
