Melvin Fires 4-Hitter as Redwomen Upset Lady Hornets

PEDRO — As they say, “Get ‘em on, get ‘em over, get ‘em in.”
In a game that featured no runs batted in, the Rock Hill Redwomen used the 4-hit pitching of Isabelle Melvin to top the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 4-1 on Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Melvin struck out 9 and did not issue a walk as she went the distance.
Coal Grove’s Abbie Deeds gave up just 6 hits, struck out 12 and walked 3 in taking the loss.
Coal Grove (3-3, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Shay Collins was hit by a pitch, moved up on a ground out, took third on a hit by Rylee Black and scored on a wild pitch.
Rock Hill (2-4, 1-0) tied the game in the second on a leadoff triple by Abby Schug and a wild pitch.
The Redwomen took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.
With one out, Schug walked, Alaina Wilds singled, and Lilli Griffith walked to load the bases.
Schug scored on a throwing error and Wilds came home on a wild pitch.
The Redwomen added an insurance run in the sixth when Wilds doubled, took third on a hit by Griffith and scored on an outfield error.
Wilds went 2-2 with a double and Kidd 2-3 to pace the Rock Hill offense.
