Lady Hornets Give All-Around Effort To Advance In Tourney

COAL GROVE — You can’t always make the offense work, but you can control how you play defense.

For the Coal Grove Lady Hornets, they controlled their defense but were able to get the offense going as well.

The Lady Hornets turned in a solid all-around performance as they beat the Leesburg Fairfield Lady Lions 49-36 in the opening round of the Division 6 tournament.

“We played well, especially defensively,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller. “They scored 36 points but banked in four 3-pointers.”

Coal Grove (11-12) advances to the second round to play Belpre at Chillicothe Southeastern on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Jenna Anson led the Lady Hornets with a game-high 21 points, thus matching her career high. Emma Lively scored 14 points in the winning effort.

“Kendall Taylor had the best complete game since she’s been here. She played great defense on their leading scorer and had multiple great passes for assists,” said Miller. “Jenna Anson had a big scoring night.”

Coal Grove opened the game by taking a 12-5 lead as five different players scored including Lively who hit a 3-pointer.

The Lady Hornets extended their lead to 26-14 in the second quarter as Anson scored 8 points, Lively hit another 3-pointer and Taylor had 3 points.

Paisley Stalhlut, Rilee Quickle and Kassi Miller all hit 3-pointers for the Lady Wildcats.

Fairfield cut the deficit to 33-25 in the third quarter as Quickle hit a 3-pointer as she scored 5 points with Kassi Miller hitting a 3-pointer.

Anson scored 3 points for Coal Grove in the quarter.

But the Lady Hornets bounced back and outscored Leesburg 16-11 in the fourth quarter to win going away.

Lively drained two more 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Anson had 6 points and Taylor chipped in a basket.

Miller had 9 points and Quickle 8 to pace Fairfield (7-16).
