Lady Hornets get their revenge, take first place in OVC

COAL GROVE — This wasn’t about revenge. It was about first place.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets only Ohio Valley Conference loss was to the Rock Hill Redwomen 4-1 a couple of weeks ago.

But the Lady Hornets held off the Redwomen for a 7-5 win on Friday to take over sole possession of first place.

The Lady Hornets are now 5-1 in the OVC followed by Ironton at 7-2 and South Point at 5-2.

Coal Grove (8-3) went out in front 3-0 in the first inning.

Abbie Deeds led off with a single, Rylee Black doubled and Rylee Bare singled home both runners and went to second on the throw home. Mia Haynes followed with a base hit to score Bare.

Rock Hill (4-8, 3-3) rallied to tie the game in the fourth inning.

Savannah Kidd singled, Lilli Griffith was safe on a fielder’s choice with Kidd safe at second. Bridgette Stapleton reached on an error as the runners scored and Charlee Long doubled home the final run.

The game remained tied until the sixth when the Lady Hornets scored 4 times.

With one out, Braelie Hitchcock singled, Kendall Taylor put down a sacrifice bunt and Brianna Malone singled in the go-ahead run.

Deeds singled  and the runners moved up when Izzy Kitts reached on an error. Black followed with a base hit to drive in 2 more runs.

The Redwomen rallied in the seventh only to fall short.

Samantha Bamer led off with a base hit and went to third  on a hit by Abby Schug who also scored on the play due to an outfield error.

But Deeds got a pop out to shortstop and struck out the next batter to end the game.

Coal Grove had 11 hits with Black 3-4, a double and 3 RBI and Deeds was 3-4.

Deeds pitched a 6-hitter to get the win. She had 16 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Long was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI and Bamer 2-4 with a double for the Redwomen.

Melvin took the loss. She gave up 4 earned runs, struck out 7 and walked just one.
