RACELAND, Ky. — It was just what it was billed to be.
The Coal Grove Lady Hornets and ace Abbie Deeds faced the Raceland Lady Rams and ace Davanna Grubb in a non-league game on Thursday.
Deeds gave up only three hits as she struck out 11 and walked three. Grubb fanned three, walked three and gave up six hits.
Raceland (21-7) scored the game’s only run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Carly Fannin led off the inning with a base hit and stole second base. After a fly out, Bryna Wellman doubled to right field to score Fannin and end the game.
Coal Grove (15-4) threatened in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, Miah Haynes had a two-out single, Kasey Vanderhoof walked and Braelie Hitchcock singled to load the bases.
But a comebacker to Grubb ended the threat.
In the fifth, Hailie McKnight was hit by a pitch leading off and Deeds put down a sacrifice bunt. A fly out made two outs but Izzy Kitts and Rylee Black walked to load the bases.
But a ground out ended the scoring attempt.
Hitchcock was 2-3 and Haynes 2-4 to lead the Lady Hornets.
