IRONTON — As a defensive back, Brycen Mullins is known for his coverage. Friday night, he made people aware of his recovery skills.

Mullins recovered a fumble on a kickoff that led to a touchdown, and then recovered the ensuing onside kickoff that led to another score.

These quick touchdowns helped ignite a night of quick scoring as the Ironton Fighting Tigers routed the Jackson Ironman 49-10 in a non-league game at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

Ironton head coach Trevon Pendleton said that the two big plays by Mullins set the tone for the game.

“That kickoff return where we got that strip and we was able to flip it, and we was able to capitalize on another onside kick opportunity. Everyone is executing at a high level when their name is called and that’s the mark of a good team,” said Pendleton.

Jackson (3-2) was able to get a first down to start the game but was then forced to punt. However, Ironton fumbled the punt at its own 13 and the Ironmen recovered.

A penalty and 2-yard loss left Jackson facing a fourth down at the 17 and Thatcher Brown kicked a 34-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 5:22 left in the quarter.

It didn’t take long for Ironton to answer.

A pop pass to Mullins went for 16 yards and Zayne Williams bolted 32 yards to the Jackson 28. Tyler Carmon ran through the defense for the 28 yards and a touchdown with 4:01 on the clock. Beckham Waginger kicked the first of 7 extra points and Ironton led 7-0.

Mullins stripped the kick returner on the kickoff and recovered at the Jackson 37. After an incompletion, Kayden Edwards hit Braydon Baker who beat his man deep and made the catch going into the end zone for the touchdown and it was 14-3 at the 3:34 mark.

Ironton (5-0) then pulled off an onside kickoff with Mullins streaking down the sideline and jumping on the ball at the Jackson 48.

It took 7 plays to complete the drive with Carmon running the final 14 yards for the score and a 21-3 lead.

Things moved even quicker in the second quarter for the Ironton offense.

Following a short Jackson punt, Ironton had the ball at the Ironman 39. Edwards hit Maddix Markel on a slant and he took it the rest of the way for a 39-yard scoring play and it was 28-3 with 10:22 on the clock.

After another Jackson puntIronton had the ball at the Ironmen 45 and Edwards gave a pop pass to Easton Caudill who took it the distance and the lead was not 35-3 with 8:33 left in the half.

Ironton’s next possession began at their own 29 and it took 9 plays to score with Tyson Harvey running the final 4 yards into the end zone for a 42-3 lead with jut 1:09 left in the half.

Edwards — who ran for 153 yards and 3 scores last week — ran just twice for 13 yards but was 6-of-10 passing for 153 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Pendleton said Edwards is a two dimensional quarterback and he’s good at either one depending on how the defense wants to play against him.

“Obviously, we’re going to get some different looks with him because of his legs. You never know what we’re going to get defensively,” said Pendleton.

“But  I think he done a very good job. There’s a few of them (throws) we’d like to have back, but a lot of that is just jitters early. I think he’s getting more and more comfortable. There late I thought he made some really good throws.”

With a running clock in progress, Ironton got a final score with 3:16 left in the third quarter as Kylan Grace ran 14 yards to cap a quick 37-yard, 4-play drive.

Jackson got a score with 4:08 to play on a 3-yard run by Ryan Seimetz to culminate an 80-yard 12-play drive highlighted by a 32-yard pass from C.J. Crabtree to Eli Ray.

Ironton had a balanced offense with 165 yards rushing and 163 passing for a 328 total. Williams had 53- yards on lust 5 carries and Caron 42 yards on 2 attempts.

The defense limited Jackson to 96 total yards with 52 on the ground and 44 through the air. The Fighting Tigers also held Seimetz to 42 yards on 13 carries with 38 coming on the scoring drive.

“We had to stop (Seimetz) and we did everything we could to stop him. We was going to make them throw it to beat us,” said Pendleton. “Early on, we had quite a bit of success. We got beat throwing the ball a few times. That’s something we’re going to work on. But, other than that, very pleased with our performance.”

Ironton visits unbeaten Wheelersburg next Friday.
