Dragons upend Trojans chances in OVC title race

PROCTORVILLE — As John McClane said when he was messing up the thieves' plans in the movie Die Hard, “I’m a monkey in the wrench.”

The Fairland Dragons were the monkey in the wrench as they upset the Portsmouth Trojans 6-4 on Monday to end the Trojans’ title hopes and give Ironton the title outright.

Fairland improved to 6-15 overall and 5-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Portsmouth fell to 12-6 on the season and 9-3 in the league. Ironton is 12-1 in the conference and has only Portsmouth remaining to play in the OVC.

Ethan Wall went 6 innings for the win as he gave up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, stuck out 10 and walked 3. Kaden Wiseman pitched the seventh for the save.

Portsmouth’s Leelind Scurlock failed to get out of the first inning as was touched up for 5 earned runs and 4 hits in just one-third of an inning.

Fairland had 10 hits as Wall went 2-3 with a home run, Garrett Cornwell 2-4 with a double and RBI, Wyatt Thomas 2-4 with a double, Elias Blankenship 2-3,  Luke Brown 1-2 with 2 RBI and Chase Lapole 1-2.
